This file contains updated information on the contents of the ProTERM Extras folder. Please note that some of the files listed below omit the revision number appended to the end of the filename. You can assume that when this file refers to a file such as "PT Emuldev", it really means "PT Emuldev 1201" (or whatever revision of the file is in the folder).

** Resource Files **
ProTERM makes use of ﾒresource filesﾓ to add features and make changes to ProTERM. ProTERM resource files have names of the form PT <subject> <version> where <subject> is a short word describing the file and <version> is a four-digit version number. For example, ﾒPT Update 1030ﾓ is version 1030 of a resource file which updates ProTERM to correct some problems and add some features.
A resource file is ﾒinstalledﾓ when it is located in the ﾒPT Resourcesﾓ folder. Each time ProTERM is started, it scans the ﾒPT Resourcesﾓ folder and loads in all resource files present in that folder. To ﾒuninstallﾓ a resource file, move it out of the ﾒPT Resourcesﾓ folder and restart ProTERM. InTrec Software makes updated versions of ProTERM resource files available for download via many online services. You can determine whether a version is newer by comparing the four-digit version number. Higher numbers indicate later (more current) versions. When you install a later version, you can discard the earlier version (keeping the older files does not create a problem, but they are not needed).
Documentation about a particular resource file is obtained by double-clicking on the icon of the file. ProTERM will open an editor document containing the fileﾕs documentation and revision history.

** Contents of Extras Folder **
* CIS Intro *
* Delphi Intro *
* GEnie Intro *
These are connect files preset to allow initial sign on to the respective service. Complete instructions for signing onto these services as a new user is located in Appendix E of the manual.
* Modem Tester *
ﾒModem Testerﾓ is used to determine what kind of modem you should select within the ProTERM Configure command to support your modem. If you have trouble determining which modem to select, choose ﾒExecﾓ from the ﾒFileﾓ menu and select the ﾒModem Testerﾓ file from the ﾒExtrasﾓ folder. Modem Tester will communicate with your modem for about 45 seconds and send a series of ﾒtestsﾓ to determine a compatible ProTERM modem driver.
* Print Test 140 *
Print Test 140 is a file specially formatted to allow experimentation with printing documents with strange dimensions (extra long or wide pages). Instructions are contained within this file explaining how to use it.
* PT Emuldev *
This is a ProTERM resource file which includes some additional terminal and keyboard emulations that are designated as ﾒunder development.ﾓ They are not complete emulations, but may be of use to some users. To make these emulations available to ProTERM, drag this file to the ﾒPT Resourcesﾓ folder and restart ProTERM. You can double-click on this file to get information about the additional emulations it provides.
* PT Style-Aaron *
This is a ProTERM resource file designed to give ProTERM a look & feel which is consistant with Aaron. If you are using Aaron to give your Mac a 3D look, you may want to drag this file to the PT Resources folder and drag the existing PT Style-3D file from the PT Resources folder to the Extras folder (only one PT Style-xxxx file should be in the PT Resources folder at a time).
* PT Style-Plain *
This is a ProTERM resource file designed to give ProTERM the fastest possible user interface using the traditional "flat" Mac look & feel. If you prefer speed over style, then you may want to drag this file to the PT Resources folder and drag the existing PT Style-3D file from the PT Resources folder to the Extras folder (only one PT Style-xxxx file should be in the PT Resources folder at a time).
* PT Serial *
This is a ProTERM resource file which adds some specialized modem port drivers to the software. When this file is dragged to the PT Resources folder, ProTERM will list some additional serial port choices in the Configure command. The additional drivers are for the modem port and support varying degrees of buffering. The driver name takes the form of "Modem Port (xxK+yyK)" where "xx" represents the size of the transmit buffer and the "yy" represents the size of the receive buffer. These drivers are meant for those users who want to experiment with different buffer sizes (and are not needed by the average user).
* Resident User Empty *
This is a template for a ProTERM Resident Macro file. If you want to create your own resident macro file which is seperate from the existing macros, you can use this file as a start. Check the Read Me Macros file in the Macros folder for more information.

** Terminal Window Scrolling **
When connected to a service, the ﾒfeelﾓ of scrolling in the terminal window (i.e., is it ﾒsmoothﾓ or ﾒjerky") is determined by the relationship between the speed of incoming data versus the speed of your computer. In general terms, a slow computer displaying fast incoming data will look more jerky than a fast computer displaying slow incoming data. If you prefer a smoother scrolling appearance, try the following:
1- Keep connect speeds to realistic values. Many high-speed modem users choose a connect speed of 57600 bps because it is the highest setting available. However, unless you are using a v.34/v.fc modem and making a 28800 connection, use a connect speed of 19200 bps instead of the higher setting. This lower speed gives a better ﾒfeelﾓ to the terminal window without any significant performance reduction.
2- Keep the size of the terminal window at 80x24 when connected to a service. If you click in the ﾒzoomﾓ box while connected, this is the default size. When you increase the size of the terminal window, you increase the amount of scrolling which must be performed each as the screen displays. The smaller the terminal window, the smoother the display.
3- On non-monochrome computers, try reducing the color/grayscale depth. In particular, using the ﾒmillionsﾓ setting has a pronounced effect on scrolling.
4- Certain memory management extensions such as RAM Doubler and OptiMem can cause a slight reduction in scrolling smoothness. Try disabling these kinds of extensions and see if the scrolling performance improves.
